The Artist: Where to Find It and Which Ability to Choose

Find The Artist during Orientation and compare Barrage, Volatile Anomaly and Shield before taking your first reported Resonant reward.

The Artist is the first Resonant opponent identified in the September 23 Epic Games Store abilities guide. The encounter occurs during Orientation, on the early Downtown route. Defeating it presents three reported Combat Ability choices: Barrage, Volatile Anomaly and Shield. This page covers the reward decision; the published guide does not supply a dependable move-by-move fight strategy.

RewardReported effectConsider it when…
BarrageHurls several projectilesYou need an attack that reaches enemies before melee contact
Volatile AnomalySummons a turret-like ally that can be thrown; Remedy also says it can detonateYou want an additional source of pressure while Dylan repositions
ShieldAbsorbs incoming damage and enables Shield Bash when dodgingYou are struggling to survive or to build Falter for an execution

Which Artist reward is safest for a first run?

The Epic author recommends Shield for survivability and reports that Shield Bash deals substantial Falter damage. That is the author's preference, not a measured universal winner. If you already dodge reliably but have trouble reaching ranged enemies, Barrage may solve a more pressing problem. If you prefer to split enemy attention while staying mobile, compare Volatile Anomaly. None of the cited sources publishes a controlled comparison of Power costs, damage, cooldowns or boss resistance.

Can you take the other two later?

Epic says the alternatives are unavailable immediately unless you reset abilities with a Reset Item, obtainable from bosses or zone vendors according to that guide. Remedy says New Game Plus allows different Combat Abilities from the same boss. Check the respec guide before consuming a material; the public game's exact reset prompt and cost still need verification.

Where does this leave the fight guide?

Orientation is a useful mission anchor, but the source does not identify an arena entrance, attack tells, phases or a proven counter. Do not spend resources based on an invented Artist weakness. The Resonants hub tracks the other reported boss rewards, while Traversal Abilities explains the separate Downtown Fault powers acquired around Orientation.

Cannot leave The Gap after the Ability reward?

Install 1.4.2 if you defeated The Artist, returned to the main menu without using the Ability selection prompt and now cannot leave The Gap. Remedy identifies that exact sequence as a fixed progression blocker. Fully relaunch after updating, load the affected save and finish the Ability choice if the prompt appears; then retry leaving. Keep the save if the exit remains blocked and report whether the reward prompt returned.

For future clears, choose your Ability before quitting to the main menu. The 1.4.2 troubleshooting steps explain how to distinguish this from the older training-area blocker. Verified October 10, 2026 against Remedy's 1.4.2 announcement; the retry sequence is our suggested check.

Update 1.4.0

The special-attack VFX frame-drop issue is Fixed in 1.4.0. The patch also fixes the respec/refund tutorial being skipped when quitting to the main menu immediately after defeating the Artist. These changes do not establish a new boss rotation.

October 2, 2026 update: Remedy's released 1.4.0 notes confirm these fixes. Full patch guide.
