The Collective: Spore Burst or Growth?
Find The Collective in the Park, compare its two Mold abilities and learn how Infected interacts with Burn in CONTROL Resonant.

The Collective is a Mold-associated Resonant reported in the Park. Earlier Gamescom presentation coverage described the encounter and a choice between two Mold powers. The September 23 Epic Games Store guide supplies their reported menu names: Spore Burst and Growth.
| Choice | Reported behavior | A useful reason to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Spore Burst | Dylan's fist rapidly fires Mold projectiles | You want direct control over which target receives Mold pressure |
| Growth | Summons up to two worm-like allies that spit Mold at nearby enemies | You want damage and status pressure while repositioning or using the Aberrant |
How does Infected work with Burn?
Both choices are Mold abilities and apply Infected, which deals damage over time. The Epic guide reports an explosion if the same target also has Burn. This creates a concrete build question: can you reliably put a fire effect on the enemy you have already Infected? An earlier demonstration showed Ignite adding fire damage, but the source does not prove that every fire attack applies the exact Burn condition required here. Check the status icons and wording in the public game before committing a reset. The Physicist's Astralized effect reportedly speeds the buildup of both Burn and Infected.
Spore Burst or Growth for a first run?
Choose Spore Burst if you prefer to aim Mold pressure yourself at one priority target. Choose Growth if you want allies to keep attacking while you move, dodge or build Power with melee hits. The Epic author prefers Growth; the article does not measure their damage, Power cost, duration, enemy targeting or survival. These missing values matter more than a blanket “best ability” label.
How did the Gamescom demo fight work?
The Wccftech reporter's account of Remedy's Gamescom walkthrough gives a useful preview-build sequence: damaging The Collective directly had little effect until Dylan destroyed its spore-firing tentacles, which exposed weak points. The demo then introduced armored Mold allies and more tentacles along the walls and ceiling. Its final described stage had two tentacles active together; the report suggests using one as cover from the other. If the public fight matches that demonstration, prioritize the tentacles and exposed weak spots before trying to burn down the central body. This is a demonstrated route through one work-in-progress build, not a verified launch-patch strategy.
The same presentation's Park objective involved finding and consuming four Mold samples to reach the Resonant. Only one sample, in a minimart, was shown during the report; the other three had already been collected for the demo. Do not use that single landmark as a complete collectible map. The Resonants hub compares the other reported boss rewards.
Cannot eat the Mold in The Park Resonant?
Update the game before searching for another route: Hotfix 1.4.1 fixes the required Mold interaction becoming impossible in The Park Resonant. Once the latest hotfix is installed, fully relaunch, load the affected save and retry the quest's required interaction. If it still fails, capture the current objective and location for support.
This is a quest-progression fix on the approach to the Resonant. Use the patch timeline to check your version and the 1.4.1 summary for the related movement correction. Verified October 10, 2026 against Remedy's 1.4.1 notes.
Update 1.4.0
Tentacles remaining alive after a One-Hit Kills Assist Mode victory are Fixed in 1.4.0. The patch also fixes Mold Scrappers being unable to move after Leap in Gravity Anomalies during this fight. Old surviving-tentacle warnings should be read as pre-patch behavior.
October 2, 2026 update: Remedy's released 1.4.0 notes confirm these fixes. Full patch guide.
