How to Respec in CONTROL Resonant
Learn where to reset Abilities and Weapon Upgrades, when respecs cost materials, and how to test a new CONTROL Resonant build safely.
On this page+
To respec in CONTROL Resonant, enter The Gap and reset Dylan's Abilities or Weapon Upgrades there. Review-build coverage reports that you can revise those choices repeatedly while you are in The Gap; after leaving, another reset requires a reset material sold by shops at a high price. The safest approach is to rebuild and test the complete loadout before returning to Manhattan, then reserve purchased reset materials for major changes.
The authored Epic guide identifies the item as Reset Item. This wiki has not verified the current confirmation prompt, price or complete refund preview. Treat The Gap as the place to experiment, and do not leave with unspent points or an untested combination.
How to reset your build
- Enter The Gap. Remedy says this mind-space can be accessed at will and is where Dylan and the Aberrant are upgraded and builds are tested.
- Record the current setup. Note the primary form, secondary form, combo ender, active Combat Abilities, and the upgrades you plan to replace. A screenshot prevents rebuilding from memory if the alternative performs worse.
- Reset one progression layer. Review coverage specifically identifies Abilities and Weapon Upgrades as resettable. Changing one layer first makes it easier to see what improved.
- Reinvest the available upgrades. Build around one job—single-target Falter, crowd control, frequent ability use, or safer defense—instead of spreading points across forms you will not equip.
- Test before leaving. Compare how quickly the setup generates Power, causes Falter, reaches an execution, and survives ranged pressure. Repeat the reset inside The Gap if the loop does not work.
- Return to the Zone only when the build is complete. Media reports disagree on how freely later resets are available, but agree that formal resets outside the initial experiment are resource-limited or carry a cost.
The exact menu tabs and controller buttons have not been checked here for every platform and language. The steps describe the reported workflow; read your current confirmation screen before spending an item.
What can be respecced?
| Build part | Current evidence | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Combat Abilities and their upgrades | Reported as resettable in The Gap | Rebuild and test before leaving |
| Aberrant Weapon Upgrades | Reported as resettable in The Gap | Reinvest around the forms you actually equip |
| Talents | Reviews sometimes use “abilities,” “points,” and “Talents” inconsistently | Check the reset preview before confirming; do not assume every node is included |
| Artifacts | Can be switched rather than permanently spent | Change the equipped passive instead of buying a reset |
| Traversal abilities | World-progression tools, not part of the normal combat respec | They reset as part of New Game Plus and must be reacquired |
This distinction prevents two expensive mistakes: buying a reset when an Artifact can simply be swapped, and expecting a combat respec to remove a traversal gate. The New Game Plus guide explains the separate carry-over rules.
Is respec free or unlimited?
There are two relevant situations. 91Mobiles reports that Abilities and Weapon Upgrades can be reset as many times as needed while in The Gap, then says later resets use premium materials available from shops. TechRadar describes reset points as limited and not free, particularly early in the game. Those accounts fit a practical commit model: experimentation inside The Gap is flexible, but reopening a committed build later costs a scarce resource.
The precise current commit and refund rules have not been tested here. Finish the build test before leaving, retain a reset material for a major change and check the actual cost before confirming.
Where to get reset materials
Review coverage says reset materials are sold at shops. Shops appear as ice cream trucks in Manhattan, and their available options expand as the surrounding Zone gains levels. That does not prove every vendor carries a reset item at every story stage, so check the current Zone's stock before planning a rebuild around a purchase.
If the item is unavailable, complete available World Events and quests, then recheck vendors. The material guide explains the 1.4.0 map stock indicators. No fixed respec price or restock timer has been measured here.
When should you respec?
When the starting weapon form feels wrong
Multiple reviewers describe choosing an early heavy form that did not suit their playstyle. A form that roots Dylan in place or builds Falter too slowly can feel much worse under projectile pressure. Respec when the problem is the core attack rhythm, not just one difficult encounter.
After unlocking a build-defining ability
A new Combat Ability can change the value of earlier upgrades. Ignite supports rapid melee pressure and Falter; a summon or crowd-control power may favor Power generation and safer positioning. Move upgrades toward the new loop instead of keeping points in an unrelated plan.
When a Zone begins to outpace the build
Review coverage links Dylan's effective level to spent Talents, weapon investment, and collected Health or Power upgrades. If normal enemies take too long to Falter, reinvest every available point after resetting; holding refunded progression in reserve may leave the active build weaker than the surrounding Zone.
Before spending a rare reset material
Use Assist settings to determine whether the problem is the build or the preferred difficulty. Damage, Power regeneration, and other parameters can be adjusted independently. A respec is useful when you want a different combat loop; Assist is faster when you only want to reduce a difficulty spike.
A three-part build test
Run the same short test after each meaningful change:
- Resource test: can the primary form generate enough Power to use the selected ability at the intended pace?
- Falter test: can the build open a Heavy enemy to an execution without spending every defensive option?
- Pressure test: can Dylan keep dealing damage while ranged enemies, projectiles, or a crowd force movement?
If one test fails, change the layer responsible. Switch the weapon pairing for contact or Falter, the ability for control, and Artifacts for passive support. Resetting the entire build each time makes it harder to identify what solved the problem.
Respec FAQ
Can I reset both Abilities and weapons?
Yes. Review-build reporting specifically names Abilities and Weapon Upgrades as resettable in The Gap.
Can I respec at any time?
The Gap can be accessed at will according to Remedy, but the game may still prevent travel during a combat encounter or scripted sequence. Later committed resets also require a material according to review coverage.
Does a respec refund every material?
The reviewed sources do not provide a reliable item-by-item refund screen. Read the confirmation preview before accepting; a one-to-one refund has not been verified here.
Do I need to respec Artifacts?
No formal reset is expected just to change equipped Artifacts; they are passive loadout items that can be switched. Crafting or rerolling an Artifact is a separate system.
Will respec reset traversal powers?
No evidence connects the normal respec with traversal progress. Traversal abilities reset when starting New Game Plus because they gate routes through the world.
Reset Items and current patch behavior
The Epic ability guide identifies a Reset Item for revisiting ability choices, obtained from boss rewards or Zone vendors. Remedy's launch hotfix reduced respec costs and increased vendor stock; 1.4.0 fixes the Artist respec/refund tutorial being skipped after an immediate exit to the main menu. Use the material and Vendor guide to check the item you need. The exact current price, refund preview and platform-specific button sequence are not verified here. Checked October 2, 2026 against Remedy's patch notes and Epic; earlier review descriptions on this page are historical observations.
