The Gap in CONTROL Resonant

Learn what The Gap is, how to access it, and what Remedy has confirmed about Dylan and Aberrant upgrades, build testing, and Artifact crafting.

The Gap is a liminal space inside Dylan Faden's mind that he can enter at will. Remedy says players can unlock upgrades for Dylan and the Aberrant, test builds, and craft Artifacts there. Going to and from The Gap is nearly instantaneous, as is fast travel between Manhattan's distinct Zones.

What can you do in The Gap?

Confirmed activityWhat Remedy has said
Upgrade DylanUnlock improvements for the playable character
Upgrade the AberrantImprove Dylan's shape-changing melee weapon
Test buildsTry combinations before returning to a Zone
Craft ArtifactsMake items used in buildcrafting

This makes The Gap a useful preparation space for the builds guide, Aberrant upgrades, and Combat Abilities. Remedy has not described every menu, upgrade cost, test-room feature, or crafting recipe. The table describes activities, not a complete list of services.

Access and travel

Thomas Puha says Dylan can access The Gap at will. He also describes travel into and out of it as nearly instantaneous. That is stronger evidence than earlier preview descriptions that only associated The Gap with crafting. The announcement does not specify whether access pauses combat, requires a safe location, or becomes available from the opening minute. Those details need launch-build testing.

Fast travel between Manhattan Zones is also nearly instantaneous. Remedy has not published the complete Zone list, fast-travel point locations, or unlock requirements. See the world guide for the wider map structure.

How The Gap connects to builds

Players can use The Gap to improve Dylan and the Aberrant, try a setup, and craft Artifacts before returning to exploration. The Epic Games Store ability guide now identifies Barrage and Volatile Anomaly as alternative rewards from The Artist during Orientation. It does not say that unselected abilities are automatically available in every test setup.

Resonant Token and the sixth slot

The same guide's sixth Combat Ability slot section reports a Resonant Token from the Pope's Research mission in The Unknown. It says a token is used to unlock a Combat Ability inside The Gap. The article does not provide a full menu sequence, every token location or all prerequisites, so check the public game's item and upgrade descriptions before spending one. The Abilities guide explains how this differs from a normal boss reward.

Earlier official material also describes Untapped Artifacts as craftable in The Gap. The September 15 announcement confirms Artifact crafting more generally; it does not explain recipes, material costs, random properties, or whether all Artifacts are crafted there. The New Game Plus guide covers the fourth Artifact slot and carried progression.

Respecs and build resets

Review-build coverage adds an important use: Abilities and Weapon Upgrades can be reset in The Gap. One report says players may revise them repeatedly while they remain there, while a later reset after returning to the world requires a premium material from a shop. Another completed review describes reset points as limited and non-free, reinforcing the value of testing before committing.

Use the Gap as a build laboratory. Record the old loadout, change one layer, reinvest the available upgrades, and compare Power generation, Falter, executions, and survival before leaving. The respec guide provides the full workflow and explains which systems should not be confused with a combat reset.

Crafting and recipe tracking

In 1.4.0, the HUD signals new purchases or upgrades in The Gap. Pin a required upgrade material, then inspect the map Vendor icon to see whether that vendor sells it. This replaces manual shopping trips based only on a material list. An earlier review observed missing recipe displays in its tested build; keep that observation historical rather than treating it as the current shopping workflow. The notes do not explicitly establish that every old recipe-display issue is fixed.

The Gap and the FBC hub

The Gap's location is defined as part of Dylan's mind. Separate preview coverage has described the Federal Bureau of Control as a hub between Zones. The exact relationship between these spaces, and where any vendors or mission services appear, has not been fully shown. For practical planning, The Gap is the confirmed place for upgrades, build testing, and Artifact crafting.

Cannot leave The Gap after The Artist?

The post-Artist exit blocker is fixed in 1.4.2. It affects the sequence where you defeat The Artist, skip the Ability selection prompt and return to the main menu. Install the hotfix, fully relaunch and reload that save. If the reward prompt appears, complete the choice before retrying the exit. This is a suggested diagnostic sequence; report a persistent lock rather than replacing the campaign save.

The separate training-area issue below was fixed in 1.4.0. Match the circumstances of your lock to the 1.4.2 Gap troubleshooting steps, and use the Artist reward guide to plan the Ability choice. Checked October 10, 2026 against Remedy's hotfix notes.

Training-area fix in 1.4.0

October 2, 2026 update: Remedy's released 1.4.0 notes confirm the HUD and Vendor improvements above, plus a fix for players getting stuck in The Gap training area. Install the patch before retrying that blocker.

Find a missing upgrade material

Use the upgrade materials and Vendor guide to identify the requirement, pin it, inspect map stock indicators and check the price before returning to The Gap. Living Shards, Reset Items and Resonant Tokens have different reported uses.

Sources and verification

Updated September 24, 2026. Thomas Puha's official PlayStation Blog feature confirms access, activities and near-instant travel; Remedy's buildcrafting explanation covers progression. The Artist rewards and Resonant Token lead come from Jason Rodriguez's Epic Games Store guide. Respec and recipe-tracking observations come from 91Mobiles, with limited-reset wording independently reported by TechRadar.
