The Patterning Explained
Learn what the PC Gaming Show developer interview confirms about the Patterning, reality distortion, Resonants, gravity spaces, and the unanswered link to the Hiss.

The Patterning is an otherworldly, reality-warping threat affecting Manhattan in CONTROL Resonant. The September PC Gaming Show developer interview describes it as something that changes people and the world around them: time and light are affected, reality becomes disordered, and people can be twisted into monstrous Resonants. It is a useful name for the crisis reshaping the city, but the cited interview leaves its origin and exact rules unresolved; this page has not checked a full campaign playthrough.
What the Patterning is confirmed to do
Creative director Mikael Kasurinen says the Patterning does more than put objects in an unexpected order: it affects people, time, and light. The interview frames Manhattan's impossible-looking spaces and altered inhabitants as consequences of this reality-changing pressure.
This is stronger evidence than treating every unusual trailer shot as an isolated anomaly. It still does not establish a complete in-game taxonomy, zone-by-zone effect list, or gameplay modifier. Those details need release-build observation.
The Patterning and Resonants
The interview describes Resonants as people twisted into monstrous bosses as the Patterning strikes Manhattan. That links the threat to the game's major encounters and helps explain why boss progression also changes Dylan's ability options.
It does not prove that every boss-sized enemy is a Resonant, that every Resonant shares one origin, or that every affected person becomes a boss. Read the Resonants guide for the confirmed reward structure and flexible boss-route rule rather than a speculative roster.
Gravity and impossible spaces
The Patterning's distorted spaces matter to exploration as well as atmosphere. In the interview, Dylan can flip gravity and move across surfaces that may read as walls or ceilings. This supports the established role of Gravity Anomalies in Manhattan traversal, while showing that the game's impossible geometry has an explicit narrative context.
The public material has not published every gravity-space rule, puzzle solution, unlock sequence, or accessibility option. A visual inversion alone does not prove a permanent movement mode or a route that players can reproduce in the release build.
Design inspirations, not lore sources
Remedy's developers cite M. C. Escher and the films A Field in England and Paprika as visual inspiration for this kind of reality distortion. The interview also describes a Resonant whose movement was developed with real dancers, with Fibonacci-number rhythms used in that fight's score.
These are production and artistic-context details. They should not be converted into a claim that Escher, the films, dance, or the Fibonacci sequence exist as literal in-universe causes or mechanics.
How it relates to the Hiss and Mold
The original Hiss crisis and Mold remain part of CONTROL Resonant's public premise. The PC Gaming Show interview calls the Patterning another otherworldly threat while leaving its causal relationship to the Hiss, Mold, and the wider paranormal setting unresolved. The June official story announcement likewise presents a new resonance alongside the Hiss and Mold without publishing a full hierarchy.
For now, this wiki treats the Patterning as confirmed terminology and its visible effects as confirmed, while keeping its origin, allegiance, and complete relationship to other forces explicitly unknown. These source limits keep speculation separate from established story evidence.
A wider CONTROL universe
Kasurinen says Remedy wants the CONTROL world to contain stories beyond the Faden family, taking inspiration from tabletop role-playing games: a universe with rules that can be seen from different perspectives. That is a creative-direction statement, not confirmation of a future game, character, or story outcome.
It does, however, explain why this page separates worldbuilding evidence from Dylan's specific story. The story guide covers the confirmed Faden premise; this page covers the force altering Manhattan.
What remains unknown
The cited sources do not settle the Patterning’s origin, goals, limits or full relationship to Hiss and Mold. This page has not checked those questions against a documented campaign playthrough or catalogued every gravity-space rule and Resonant.
Sources and verification
Verified on September 17, 2026 using the PC Gaming Show developer interview for the Patterning, Resonants, gravity, artistic inspirations, music, and broader-universe comments, plus Remedy's official June story announcement for the public premise involving a new resonance, the Hiss, and Mold. The interview is attributed where it informs a developer intention rather than a release-build system rule.
